The best demos, betas, and free-to-play games you can try this weekend

Gaming can be a notoriously expensive hobby if you indulge the impulse to play all the latest and greatest games. It does not have to be, though! These days there is a wide range of new betas, demos, and free game trials available every week. If you are looking for something new to play but don’t want to commit, we have a list of the best demos, betas, and free games that you can try out this weekend.

FIFA 18 demo

Right now, players on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC can download the demo for FIFA 18. The demo contains access to the fast-paced “Kick Off” mode, choosing from 13 clubs, including Manchester United, Real Madrid CF, and Chelsea FC. Four stadiums — Santiago Bernabéu, La Bombonera, StubHub Center, and King Fahd Stadium — will be playable, as well.

The star of the show, however, is “The Journey: Hunter Returns,” the next chapter in the FIFA story mode featuring fictional star Alex Hunter. Conflicted on whether or not he should leave his old team and start anew, we saw some of the mode’s ideas also featured in this year’s Madden NFL 18. Star soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo is also featured in the story.

FIFA 18 launches September 29.

Tom Clancy’s The Division free PC weekend

From Thursday, September 14 through Sunday, September 17, PC players will be able to play Tom Clancy’s The Division for free. This is unlimited access to the entire main game, and not just the “free trial” traditionally offered —  that version of the game will lock player progression once they hit level eight or have played six hours.

During the free weekend, The Division will be available for a 60 percent discount, as well as its season pass, and any progress you make will be transferred over if you decide to purchase the full game. To save yourself some time, you can pre-load The Division right now on Uplay.

Star Wars Battlefront free season pass

Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners can both currently snag the Star Wars Battlefront season pass for free on their respective digital storefronts. The season pass contains 16 maps not included in the base game — which you still need to own in order to use the season pass — as well as more characters, four new modes, and extra weapons and vehicles.

As the season pass’ contents are used for online multiplayer, you also need to have a membership to either Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus in order to get it. The season pass traditionally goes for $20, but it looks like it will be free through October 5. You can also purchase the entire game and its season pass as part of the “Ultimate Edition” for just $5 as well.

Free Xbox Live Games with Gold for September

There are three games available through Games with Gold this weekend.

Forza Motorsport 5: Game of the Year Edition for Xbox One leads the pack. The complete Forza 5 experience comes with 10 additional cars and is available just in time to tune-up for Forza Motorsport 7‘s launch October 3. On September 16, paranormal adventure game Oxenfree will also be made available.

On Saturday, September 16, both Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners will be able to play Battlefield 3for free. The game traditionally costs $20 on the Microsoft Store.

Free PlayStation Plus games for September

September’s PS Plus offering features a AAA exclusive and the first PlayStation VR game to join the program.

Infamous: Second Son, the 2014 superhero action game, is up for grabs. If you have been a PS Plus member for a few years, Second Son will complete the Infamous PS4 package, as its stand-alone expansion Infamous: First Light entered the program in 2015.

The first PSVR PS Plus game is a good one. Rigs: Mechanized Combat League, a multiplayer competitive shooter that plays like a futuristic sport, typically goes for $30. The PSVR launch title shows off VR technology well. Playing solo is fun, but considering it is now part of PS Plus, finding matches probably will not be very hard.

PS4 owners can also grab Strike Vector Ex, a remake of the 2014 PC game Strike Vector with optimized controls for console. The aerial shooter has tough, old-school combat across its solo and multiplayer modes.

PlayStation Vita owners can download Hatoful Boyfriend, a visual novel (it’s a pigeon dating simulator), and the twin-stick shooter We Are Doomed. Through cross-buy, both Hatoful Boyfriend and We Are Doomed can be played on PS4.

Lastly, PS3 owners, who have received an abundance of great games over the years, can pick up Truck Racer and Handball 2016.
